Locomotive Wheel Shim Tables

The key to high efficiency in locomotive service is to limit the movement of the locomotives within the maintenance shop. Accomplishing as much work as possible at one stop, or on a single track, not only means reducing overall maintenance time (thus saving shop hours), it also means improving the safety of the process. The Macton shim table provides the means to reduce locomotive movement. With a shim table installed in line with a wheel truing machine, wheels can now be shimmed on the spot to meet federal regulations without having to move the locomotive to a drop table (which is most likely on a separate track). The Macton shim table is designed to be space-saving and low-maintenance. With an oil-filled steel enclosure embedded in the foundation, the two machine screws and the chrome coated lifting columns are lubricated constantly and free of contamination. The high-starting-torque driving mechanism provides smooth lifting and lowering movement. The rugged table top with pneumatic locking system integrates the shim table into the existing track system for uninterrupted locomotive crossing. When in the lowered position, the lifting nuts are automatically disengaged to ensure that the loading from a locomotive passing over the shim table is not transferred to the lifting system.

Control and Programming Features – The shim table is controlled by programmable controller and operates semi-automatically. The precise positioning of the shim table is monitored by the program, and a flashing blue light indicates the machine status whenever the table top is engaged.

Size is Customizable to Meet Specific Needs of Customer – We will work with your engineers and other professionals throughout the process and can quickly adapt the size and shape of the shim table system to ensure that your performance and cost savings goals are met.

Lifting Speed – The high-starting-torque driving mechanism lifts and lowers at 2fpm.

Loads Handled – The normal capacity is 40 ton, but different load capacities can be designed if desired.


Reduced Operating Costs – As noted above, by limiting the movement of locomotives within the maintenance shop, you reduce your overall maintenance time in this key area, thereby reducing your manpower costs.

Operator Safety – Macton shim table systems reduce the movement of locomotives, thereby increasing operator safety.

Long-Term Reliability – Macton shim table systems have been in service for many years and move smoothly and quietly day in and day out for years – in fact, to our knowledge, none of these systems has ever failed to operate within the specified design criteria where proper minimal maintenance was performed.

Minimal Maintenance Required – These systems have an oil-filled steel enclosure imbedded in the foundation, so that the machine screws and chrome-coated lifting columns are constantly lubricated and kept free of contamination. As a result of these and other features, this system requires only a minimal amount of routine maintenance each year, which can be scheduled for times when the facility is not normally in operation – as a result, this minimal annual maintenance does not entail operational disruptions or expensive downtime for the servicing of this equipment.

Full Support Throughout Project – Macton provides full support throughout the entire project, beginning with the initial design of the system to be built, during which time Macton’s engineering staff interfaces with the project’s engineers and other professionals to provide the practical assistance and the detailed technical support needed to integrate its equipment into the overall installation.

Ease of Equipment Installation – Macton provides a specially-trained field engineer or technician to supervise the installation, start-up and commissioning of its equipment, ensuring that it is brought on-line quickly and delivers the expected performance.

Ongoing Post-Sale Support – Macton also provides long-term spare parts and technical support services. Long-term service contracts are also available at each of these installations for periodic inspection and maintenance programs, as well as training services, as needed. In addition, Macton provides customers with the ability to easily upgrade their control panels, drives and other systems to ensure they reflect the latest in technology.

Standard 5 Year Warranty – The equipment is warranted to be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of five (5) years from the date it’s shipped from Macton’s facility.  Accordingly, during such 5-year period, Macton will repair or replace any such defective parts or equipment at Macton’s cost (including covering all shipping costs).  If required to trouble-shoot such equipment, Macton will provide the services of an onsite field service engineer, and if any such defects are found to exist, Macton will pay the labor and travel costs of such field service engineer.  This warranty is void if the equipment is installed without supervision by a Macton representative.  This warranty does not cover: (i) water damage, or damage due to chemical corrosion or from dirt or debris on or around the equipment, (ii) any damage caused by improper use or accident, or from the failure to perform the recommended periodic maintenance on the equipment, (iii) normal wear and tear, (iv) portions of the equipment repaired or modified by others without Macton’s prior written approval, or (v) any additional onsite labor, tools or equipment required for the inspection, removal and reinstallation of any parts of the equipment.
